Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education is that every one can learn in a safe and secure environment and in their own way. Therefore, I will present educational information through a variety of learning styles so learning can take place for all.  Your child may experience learning through:  oral instruction, hands on activities, experiments, research, songs, poetry and more. It is my goal to create a productive learning environment beginning with good classroom management. I will strive to create an environment of mutual respect and acceptance so; each child feels safe and secure and can reach their educational potential every day. I will try to instill a love for math and science in the students. My overall goal is to help mold good citizens by living the Myatt Rules of being respectful, responsible and being here and ready.

About Your Teacher

Welcome to First Grade.  My name is Mrs. Merta, and I will be your child’s first grade math and science teacher. I have been married 3 years and have 1 daughter.    I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary studies. I also have my ESL certification. This will be my fourth year to teach and my second at Myatt Elementary.  I previously taught 3rd grade all subjects. I am very excited about this school year. It will be full of daily growth and learning.  I expect a lot out of my students, but cherish and love each and every one of them. As the year begins I will be calling on your help with homework and support.  By working together we can make this the best year ever for you and your child.  I am looking forward to having your child in my class and doing my part to help make it a great year of education.

Homework

Your child will receive a Homework Folder, it will be sent home at the beginning of every week.  Have your child complete the assignments and return the folder on Thursday.  If your child does not bring back his/her homework on Thursday, he/she will have to complete it during recess.  Your child needs to read to you daily.  Each week Mrs. Prihoda will send home a reader for your child to read.  Study the list of Sight Words and Spelling Words every week.  Your child will be assessed on the Sight Words and Spelling Words every Friday.

Behavior Plan

The main goal in my classroom is to create a positive safe environment in which each child can learn and grow.  My behavior management procedures are designed to foster self-discipline, good study habits, and respect for self and others, as well as an enjoyable learning environment.

Classroom Rules

The students will have a part in helping to create a social contract that everyone in the class will be expected to follow myself included.

Positive Rewards

I give rewards to students who are meeting my expectations and/or following the class social contract. Students earn tokens for making good choices.  On Friday the students may buy an item out of the prize box, or a special activity. Tokens may be saved for better prizes.

The class as a whole can also earn points for getting compliments from others when we are in the hall or out and about. I love to reward the whole class for outstanding work and behavior.

Communication

I feel that the lines of communication should always be open. You can call me or e-mail me at any time. The best way to reach me is through e-mail, . I will try and answer you back in a timely manner. My conference time will be from 8:15-9:15 in the morning.
